As a former Junior Miss contestant, Shannon O’Neil has a love of pageantry and a desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Not surprisingly, Shannon found her way to the Miss America Organization and has embraced the service element in an exciting way.

“I’m in this program for my community,” says Shannon. “I’ve been competing at the local level for two years now and it’s been an incredible journey.”

Her platform is entitled “T.O.N.E. Our Children: Teaching about Obesity, Nutrition, and Exercise.” Her ongoing mission for the past three years has been to provide children with the necessary tools to take charge of their own wellbeing, and to become self-motivators.

Inspired by her own struggle with weight and food, Shannon is determined to help students in Lima County understand the power of nutrition and exercise.

In order to promote her platform, Shannon partnered with the “Breakfast in the Classroom,” a program that provides students a well-balanced breakfast at school which spurs better attendance and a greater interest in nutrition.

In order to help fund this program, Shannon is donating the proceeds from her debut album, called “Yesterday Once More.” The album is a tribute to Karen Carpenter, a childhood favorite of Shannon’s. The album is a family affair, with Shannon singing and accompanied by her father. To date, Shannon has raised over $1500 since releasing her album in December 2009.

In addition to the “Breakfast in the Classroom Program” and her album, Shannon has also led multiple health and fitness programs for both children and teens, including a five-month “Fitness Challenge” at Heritage Elementary, one of Lima’s intercity schools.
As she prepares to compete at Miss Ohio and spread her message of community involvement, Shannon is committed to the children of Lima County.

“I am unconditionally inspired to help others attain the confidence, self-respect, positive body image, and overall improved quality of life that I have finally achieved!” says Shannon. “It’s important to look within yourself and find your passion. The time, the committment, the dedication—it all comes easily if you are passionate.”
