Last week I was invited to attend The Grand Rapids Rampage Women’s Football Academy, sponsored by Huntington Bank’s Women’s Initiative. The Grand Rapids Rampage is our city’s local arena football team. I figured I was in town and it sounded like great exercise, so why not? I had no idea what to expect out of the evening, and I certainly didn’t think it would prove to be a valuable lesson about networking.

One of the things I love best about being in the travel industry is the traveling itself, but with each departure, it seems my mother comes up with a couple diff erent safety tips for me like "don't hang your purse on the bathroom door stalls" and "don't leave a receipt lying around because someone might steal your identity." I think she worries about me too much. However, when I recently heard some theft advise from a professional, it got my full attention.

How many of you out there made a resolution for the New Year? Perhaps as the ball dropped you vowed to lose weight, get better organized, or spend more time with family. Second question: How many of you have stuck by your resolution? If you ask anyone from the Midwest what he or she likes best about living here you will often hear "the changing of the seasons." For me, that's why I choose to live here. Don't get me wrong...I love a warm sunny day sitting on the beach. In fact, for those of you who know me, the hotter outside the better. But the truth is that I love the changes in season as much as I love the summer months. There is nothing like taking a drive in the country to witness Mother Nature's colorful show in autumn. And what would the holiday season be without snow? But with each change of season brings anticipation and of course...change.

What do you think is the number-one marketing strategy for a destination? If you answered, "word of mouth," you're correct. When people visit places they enjoy, they share their photos and stories with others, and that's how places become hot spots for travelers. That's also why places with bad stereotypes have such a hard time overcoming a negative image. But often it's these places that are the most surprising and offer the most unique experiences to its visitors.

I'm notorious for saying, "once this or that happens, things caught up." Have you ever heard yourself saying this? And seems impossible to get everything done. You, too, huh?
